UCLA Health – San Luis Obispo

UCLA Health – San Luis Obispo

When UCLA Health prepared to open its new outpatient facility in San Luis Obispo, CA, there was no room for ambiguity. As a trusted healthcare institution serving all of California, they needed a monument sign that would guide patients with clarity and confidence — while reflecting the quiet professionalism that defines their brand.

Signature Signs, a longtime signage partner for UCLA Health, was selected to design and fabricate the main monument sign at the facility’s entrance. Built with precision and aligned with UCLA Health’s brand guidelines, this sign doesn’t just mark a location — it reinforces a promise.

A Longstanding Partnership, Now in San Luis Obispo

Our relationship with UCLA Health spans multiple locations and many years. That history allowed us to approach this project not as a vendor, but as a brand steward — with full fluency in UCLA Health’s visual language, compliance standards, and expectations for quality.

This San Luis Obispo installation is part of that ongoing trust. While other signs on-site were handled by different providers, the monument sign at the entrance — designed, fabricated, and installed by our team — is the anchor.

The Role of the Monument Sign: Functional and Foundational

Located near the front of 862 Aerovista Place, the monument sign serves as the primary exterior identification point for the facility. It was engineered to meet several essential criteria:

  • Immediate Recognition: Using official UCLA Health branding — color-matched blue and black, proper spacing, and certified typography.
  • High Visibility: Oriented toward both vehicle traffic and pedestrian approach, ensuring the site is easily located from the main access road.
  • Environmental Suitability: Materials chosen for coastal resilience, including UV resistance, anti-fade coatings, and sealed composite panels.

The base and face were constructed with layered panels in matte slate and bright white, creating sharp contrast while maintaining a professional medical tone.

Design Details That Matter

Healthcare signage isn’t decorative — it’s directional, emotional, and mission-critical. This sign was built to:

  • Comply with zoning and monument height restrictions in San Luis Obispo.
  • Integrate with surrounding landscaping and site architecture.
  • Withstand fog, sun, and salt-air exposure, common to California’s Central Coast.
  • Serve as the first and most reassuring visual touchpoint for patients arriving for care.

The Impact: Anchoring a Presence of Care

While wayfinding signs and building numerals contribute to the full experience, it’s the monument sign that speaks first. For many visitors, this sign is the first visual confirmation that they’re in the right place — and that they’re in good hands.

UCLA Health now has a highly visible, brand-faithful monument that supports its mission: to make quality care accessible, approachable, and unmistakable — starting at the curb.
